~Hello Out There?~

Crazy semester is over! Yay! I never want to do that again! I kinda overloaded myself. I think I say this every semester but I really mean it this time: I’m not taking that many credit hours next semester…although I am taking a summer class. *** Oh well! Highlights from this semester are as follows:

  • I now have the two technical classes for my major out of the way: Modern Grammar and Linguistics, and Literary Criticism. Tough classes but hopefully I’m better for taking them…nobody comment on that please.
  • Ballroom Class was the most fun I’ve ever had in a college course! I learned the Foxtrot, Cha-Cha, Waltz, and Swing. Swing is awesome! My partner only dropped me a couple of times and my knee healed up pretty quickly. I haven’t had a chance to swing dance in a week and a half. Anybody know of a place to go dance around here? Anybody want to go with me?
  • I need only 22 more credit hours to graduate from college! Yeehaw!
  • I kept bumping my hours up at work to the point where I didn’t have any down time at all. Crazy but good! There was this big merge and now it’s a café so that was kind of a change but I’m really excited for them! Business has picked up!
  • And I quit my job…long story that really isn’t worth telling. Hence, I’m looking for a new job(s) for the summer. If anybody hears about anything, please let me know!
  • I started dating this really awesome guy around the middle of March named Sean. We met at church about 3 ½ years ago. I am extremely blessed to have this guy in my life! If I had a picture of us, I’d post it. Well, I do have one but it’s about a year and a half old and it’s really isn’t a great picture at all. So I’ll hold off on that for a bit.
  • AND the biggest thing is what God has been teaching me so far this year. I think He planned on 2007 being the year that He wanted me to learn about the true definition of “grace.” Whoa! That’s a post in itself! To sum it up: it is terrifying and liberating! And definitely one of the most incredible things ever!

I wish I had been able to post more this semester but with school and work, I barely kept my head up. Praise God for summer breaks! Sean commented yesterday on how I seemed to be more laid back than usual. I responded, “This must be me when I’m not completely stressed out.” It’s such a nice feeling having a little bit of downtime!

Even with the craziness, I’ve tried to write down a few stories about my brothers to share with y’all. Just as a reminder, Josh is ten and Kiffer is eight years old. Happy reading!

Mark was making his lunch last week and trying to stump Josh and Kiffer on riddles while he was at it.

Mark: Okay guys, If April showers bring May flowers, then what do May flowers bring?

Josh and Kiffer: Pilgrims!!

Mark: Oh man…*bummed because they knew the answer*

A few minutes later

Mark: Hey Kif! What came first? The chicken or the egg?

Kiffer: Whoa! That’s a good question! Hmm….*stands there thinking*

Josh: *yells from the other room* I know! God made them both!

Kiffer: *yells back* I know that! But which one came first?...probably the chicken…

Me: *sitting at the kitchen table* I know the answer. Both. I think God created a pregnant chicken.

Mark: *a smile crosses his face*

Kiffer: A pregnant chicken?

Me: *to Mark* And you think I’m brilliant! You are so going to use that in the future!

Mark: *nods head with a grin on his face*

Kiffer: *folds his hands and closes his eyes in the middle of the kitchen* Dear God, please help me to remember

to ask you whether the chicken or the egg came first when I get to Heaven. Amen!

A few days ago, Josh was sitting at the kitchen table playing with action figures while Kiffer was looking over his shoulder.

Josh: *makes one of the action figures speak to another action figure with a deep voice* Hey Milliard!

Would you like to play Hot Tomato with a grenade?

Kiffer: *interrupts* What’s Hot Tomato?

Me: Hot Potato, guys. It’s called Hot Potato.

Josh: Oh right.

Josh came downstairs this afternoon while I was working on my resume. I used to have one but I lost it when our computer crashed so I was recreating it. While I was working on it, I was watching a movie. I have a hard time stopping long enough to just watch a movie. I guess I always feel unproductive so I normally multi-task and work on something more worthwhile at the same time. I was watching “Never Been Kissed” with Drew Barrymore. It’s a cute film if you haven’t seen it! Of course, Josh picked the one moment to come downstairs and talk to me when Barrymore is trying to get to her locker which is being blocked by two high schoolers who are passionately kissing. Naturally, I paused it but Josh had already seen what was going on.

Josh: What are you watching?

Me: *laughing a little bit at his timing* Never Been Kissed

Josh: I can tell that this is disgusting.

Josh and Kiffer have been on an Adventures in Odyssey kick for the last week or so. Ah! The good old days! Anyone else remember Adventures in Odyssey? I used to listen to a couple of them every single day! I’d still listen to them if I had time. I told my mom yesterday that if she ever decides to get rid of her tapes, she has to let me know before selling them at any curriculum fairs or over ebay.

Kiffer: Which one did you put in?

Josh: The next one is called, “The Trouble with Girls.”

Kiffer: Amen to that!

~Crazy Life~

Comment from my Lit Crit professor: "You haven't written on your Xanga site in a long time."

Comment from my mom: "Why don't you write on Xanga anymore? I loved reading your posts!"

Okay, when my Lit Crit prof and my mom start to say things like that, I know I've been AWOL for awhile. Life has been super crazy for the last...5 weeks or so. Actually, it's been crazy since January 1st. I think I'm in for a year of changes. Yeah, I know it's April and I'm just now coming up with that.  I'm not one for a lot of change but pretty much everything has been shaken up a bit since the beginning of the year. I've decided to take a new perspective on it: If I just accept that everything will change and try to go with the flow, then things won't actually be that traumatic when they do change. I'm not sure if this works long term yet. I'll let you know.

I have a million great stories but no time to write them down right now. I'm down to my last 4 weeks of school and I'm hanging on for dear life. Hopefully I'll at least have more time to blog in the summer, unless I can figure out how to make that fit in with the rest of my hectic schedule before then. I know the rest of you are winding down for the summer. Stick in there!

Have an amazing Easter weekend! Don't forget to take time out to focus on our Savior!

~Morphemes~

I'm sprinting to keep up with life. Ahh!! I have a weekend intensive class tonight and all day tomorrow plus I'm supposed to help edit our university's literary magazine called SCOP. Not to mention that my Lit Crit prof gave us Derrida stuff to read. Kinda crazy!

I thought that today I would give y'all an insight into my day-to-day life. ***Warning: the following shows how addled my brain is at this point in the semester. What is truly scary is that I still have 2/3 of the semester to go.*** The following is a conversation that occurred on Facebook between me and another student in my Modern Grammar and Linguistics class. We had a test on Wednesday so this is the discussion that happened that evening and on Thursday:

Student: We didn't ever cover transitive verbs, did we? I don't remember that at all...

Me: Nope. I don't remember that being on the test. But what was this about "counterterrorists"? What?! Ahhh!!!

Student: The transitive verb thing was on the section where she listed attributes and then we had to come up with a

word that fit them. Also, Anna and I are pretty sure there is no such thing as an adverb, time, superlative.

Me: Thank you! I couldn't come up with anything for adverb, time, superlative. I stared at that question forever and

finally wrote, "more immediately" because I couldn't come up with anything else. Seriously. This and the

"counterterrorists" morpheme question are going to need to be brought up. Would "er" be a derivational or an

inflectional morpheme? "er" is an inflectional morpheme but the rule is that you can only have those after

derivational morphemes. And we have "ist" in that word also! Not to mention that she said she wouldn't give us

any words with derivational or inflectional morphemes in the middle. I finally wrote that it was an inflectional

morpheme. *shrugs* Who knows?

Student: Actually, er isn't an inflectional morpheme...remember, there are only eight, and they don't change the

meaning of a word...er does. But I think I put that counter was a morpheme by itself. Oh well, I guess we'll all just

have to hope for the best.

Me: Yes it is! "er" is an adverb/adjective inflectional morpheme....but I guess that word isn't an adjective, is it?

Good grief. So sometimes those are inflectional morphemes and sometimes they aren't? That question should be

thrown out.

Student: Oh, yeah, you're right...I guess I got confused because it is an adjective morpheme, and count is a verb.

Boy, this is a geeky conversation... :)

I actually have conversations like that outside of school. Isn't that ridiculous? Haha! As you can tell, we will be interested to see what our grade is on that test.

Yesterday afternoon I was talking to my mom and Kiffer was sitting there.

Me: I don't understand males. I just don't understand them.

Mom: I don't understand them either.

Me: You don't understand them?

Mom: Well, I've mostly figured out my male...(my parents have been married for 25 years)

Kiffer: What's a "male"?

Mom: Males are boys.

Kiffer: Oh right. I can help you understand them!

Me: Really?

Kiffer: Yeah, boys are nice. And they are better!

There we go! A geeky conversation and a cute conversation to entertain you until I can make it back to xanga. It might be about a week before I have time to write again. Everybody stay safe!

~Roses are Red~

Friday night, a friend of mine came into the coffee shop with one of his friends (who I hadn't met before). We talked for awhile and then they went to leave.

Me: It's so cold here!

Guy: *looks at me*

Me: I grew up in the desert, about a half hour north of the border in New Mexico. It's freezing in this state!

Guy: *looks at me closely* Shouldn't you be darker?

Me and my friend: *start laughing*

That is the first time someone has ever tried to connect the way I look to what part of the country I am from. I thought it was hilarious!! Can anybody suggest a good place to go for tans?

And yet another story from my lovely grammar class (yes, I'm being sarcastic):

Prof: *looks at another student with my name--not me* Rebecca, will you please do the next word in the exercise?

*stops and looks at me* How do your other professors differentiate between you two?

Other Rebecca: The other prof calls her Rebecca [insert last name].

Prof: Calls her Rebecca [insert last name]?

Me: Well actually he normally says Rebecca [last name] but he clears his throat first.

Other Rebecca: So it sound like this: *clears throat* Rebecca [last name]

Prof: ....okay.

Later on, my turn came:

Student: *finishes her word*

Prof: *looks at me and clears throat*

Me: I think it's 1, 2......it's really sad that I'm answering to that.

Class: *laughs*

So we all know that Valentine's Day was yesterday. I received several messages from various girls (we stick together on days like that ).

A couple of girls in my Grammar class decided that I should have a Valentine from them so that I would feel included in the day's festivities. They pulled their chairs together and started whispering. A couple of minutes later they handed me a piece of notebook paper with a heart drawn in the middle. In the center of the heart was written:

Roses are Red,

Violets are Blue,

Hoop skirts are cute,

& so are You!

The girl who sits next to me in the class saw the note and decided that she wanted to be included. Two minutes later, I had another piece of notebook paper with another heart drawn in the center of it. Inside that heart was written:

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Some poems rhyme,

And some don't.

But the best message of the day goes to a friend who was going to come to the coffee shop but didn't get to because her meeting ran late. Her text message made me just about die laughing:

I just got done and I know you're

closing! I was gonna come by, but

Happy Valentine's Day anyway! The

hoo ha crap is almost over!

Hehe! I love it! Anyhow, I hope y'all have a great weekend!
